What's Therapy Like?
As a new counseling intern, I remember sitting there scared to death to meet with my first client and my supervisor looked me in the eyes and told me… “You got this. It’s just like treading water”
You know… you’re out in the middle of the ocean with your client … treading… and every once and awhile you ask your client, “Hey, you want to go a little bit deeper?” and you dunk under for a few moments only to return to the surface for some air. Then you ask again “Hey… let’s go even deeper this time” … returning to the surface once again.
And this process continues over and over again until we reach the bottom. The core. The reason for the pain, hurt, shame, or fear.
And then we sit…
Huh? At the bottom of the ocean?
Yes, we sit in the pain. We let it wash over us and most importantly...we feel it.
The only difference is this time when you feel it… whatever it is… you aren’t alone. You have someone there to support you and bring you back to the surface, to remind you that you are safe, and you are loved.
And it is there… in those moments of true vulnerability, connection, and empathy… that there is HEALING.
We are not meant to go to the bottom of the ocean alone.
Ever since that first client, I have had the honor of sitting at the bottom of the ocean with so many amazing people.
